The Mid Island Metis Nation has been established since October 8th, 1996, serving the Mid Island region of Vancouver Island, BC. The Mid Island Metis Nation is recognized by The Metis Provincial Council of British Columbia as the local for the Mid Island District. This district encompasses, Nanaimo, Ladysmith, Parksville, Qualicum Beach, Nanoose Bay, Lanztville, Bowser, Errington, Coombs, and Gabriola Island.

• To protect and promote the Metis culture and   heritage through research, communications and   involvement in cultural activities.
• To develop and implement training and   education initiatives.
• To ensure an effective communications vehicle   is established.
• To develop and implement economic development   initiatives, for the Metis people in the mid-  island region of Vancouver Island, BC.

• Processing of Metis Citizenship applications with cards, through genealogical   approval and community acceptance.
• Information resources on job postings (specific to Metis and other Aboriginals).
• Training and education opportunities and initiatives.
• Networking with other agencies, educators and the local community.
• Current and ongoing Metis events in the community, island and mainland.
• Artist opportunities and initiatives.
• Genealogy links and researcher information.
• Health information and updates.

The Metis Nation Accord uses criteria of self-identification and community acceptance as a determinant of Metis Citizenship. These conditions are consistent with the United Nations criteria set out in the various declarations for indigenous people.

Metis means a person who self-identifies as Metis, is of historic Metis Nation Ancestry, is distinct from other Aboriginal Peoples and is accepted by the Metis Nation.

Defined Terms in National Definition of Metis
WHEREAS on September 27, 2002 the Metis Nation adopted a national definition of Metis; and
WHEREAS within the definition there are defined terms;
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Metis Nation adopts the following defined terms for its national definition of Metis;
"Historic Metis Nation" means the Aboriginal people then known as Metis or Half-Breeds who resided in Historic Metis Nation Homeland;
"Historic Metis Nation Homeland" means the area of land in west central North America used and occupied as the traditional territory of the Metis or Half-Breeds as they were then known;
Metis Nation" means the Aboriginal people descended from the Historic Metis Nation, which is now comprised of all Metis Nation citizens and is one of the "aboriginal peoples of Canada" within s.35 of the Constitution Act of 1982;
"Distinct from other Aboriginal Peoples" means distinct for cultural and nationhood purposes.
