Metis Nation Leadership Initiate Historic Land Claim Case in Manitoba
Winnipeg, Mb - Metis National Council (MNC) President Clement Chartier, Manitoba Metis Federation (MMF) President David Chartrand, and Metis Nation British Columbia (MNBC) President Bruce Dumont attend the initial sitting of the Manitoba Metis Federation’s historic land claim case April 3, 2006.

Over 100 Metis Nation supporters from across Canada were in attendance at the courthouse this morning to support the MMF’s land claim case. The MMF land claim case, led by legal counsel Mr. Thomas Berger and Mr. Jim Aldridge, focuses on the issuance of script that was to be provided to the Metis people by the Government of Canada during the initiation of Manitoba as a Province within Confederation. Specifically the case focuses on Section 31 of the Manitoba Act that ensured the Metis families were to receive roughly 1.4 million acres of land in recognition of their Aboriginal Rights. Section 31 provided land recognition to over 7000 Metis children.

The Metis Nation British Columbia (MNBC) led by President Bruce Dumont, Vice President Lorne LaFleur, and Regional Directors Rene Therrien, and Dan Pope attended this historic court case. The case is expected to be argued for no less than three (3) months. MNBC President Dumont stated, “the Metis Nation must support this historic case, the outcome will affect all Canadians”.

MNBC President Dumont further went on to say "the Metis seek recognition of our people, that we are part of Canada and have a rightful place in this great country. The Metis understand that the past cannot be changed but today we must recognize these historic mistakes and truly resolve the issues in the best interests of all Canadians."

Current research has revealed that less than 2% of the proposed script system actually was provided to the Metis people. This is critical to the case and more specifically how the land that was guaranteed to the Metis children was misappropriated.

In response to recent questions inquiring about benefits available to Metis people through NAHO please visit our web site for full details. www.naho.ca
However, briefly, at the community level we offer the following:
1. Fellowship Grants: Three per year, $5000 each, to Metis graduate students for population health research.
2. Needs Assessment Guide: A Community-Based Needs Assessment Tool (can be downloaded from the web site, "Publications") that can be used to identify community needs and program/service gaps (completed over a 3-6 month period, can be used to assist in applications for funding from other source agencies).
3. On-line Health Careers Guide: To assist with career option decision-making/assessment and funding sources.
4. Traditional Health: Our Elders Profiles booklet series is also available on-line. Our purpose here is to share traditional knowledge and healing practices with communities. A second installment in this series, as well as a cookbook, and on-line photo gallery (e.g., photos from the Michif Museum at North Fraser Metis Association) will be available in the near future.
With the arrival of a new Director and a new fiscal year, we look forward to implementing our 2006-07 workplan and I will ensure I keep you posted about the Centre's activities that may be of interest to Metis communities.

Comments & Suggestions

There are many more publications, catalogues, newsletters, announcments and events that come through our office. As the newsletter space is no longer limited (*printed version still on space restriction of 3 pages*) with a web page format, we are hoping to be able to provide more of the information the comes into the Resouce Center. Remember also that there is only so much time to work on our newsletter, we will try to do our best. Also, now with the web newsletter, when time permits we will be able to update the infomation more frequently with information that comes in after the newsletter is sent out. It is difficult to pick and choose what we include in our publication.

The general rule is our community events and members first, any other Metis event or announcement second, job postings third and everything else fourth. Please feel free to come down to the office and peruse all the information available that is sent to us.
