Education Report

The various committees for the Aboriginal School Board, District #68, have been busy with Aboriginal Achievment Awards, preparations for graduation ceremonies and other year ending activities. Hard to believe we only have two months until the end of this school year. We have completed the year long process of consultation for the new Aboriginal Education Enhancement Agreement and are planning for a date and signing ceremony for this important document. I will pass on that information when dates are confirmed.

The mini Metis Cultural Awareness Day for Gabriola is tentatively planned for June 20th but because of scheduling conflicts I have asked if they can change the date to June 16th instead. I am still waiting for their answer and will let everyone know as soon as I can. We would like to have about eight or ten stations so if anyone knows anyone who would like to participate please let me know.

A bit off the topic of School District #68 education but still about Metis education--MIMN still has the funding from First People's Heritage, Language and Culture Council. That was the grant for the Dance/Theatre project, so far that has just not come together. Yvonne Chartrand and Eliza Gardener, both of whom were named in the grant as instructors, have become extremely busy ladies and have not been able to participate. Connie Kulhavey would like to teach a dance class but feels that she does not know enough dances and she too is a very busy lady. Connie is willing to travel to Vancouver if necessary to take dance lessons so she can come home and share her learning but she needs funding to do that. So, here we are with money and no instructors. I am going to ask Yvonne again if she is available to spend some time here but if anyone knows a willing dance instructor let me know.

Last year's Kids Camp was a big success so I thought perhaps we could use the First People's funding to do the same thing again this year but with more focus on dance. Maybe we could have a two week camp instead of just one week and then we could create a dance group that can perform throughout the summer.

So if anyone has any ideas about that, any names of instructors, etc. or any other ideas about the First Peoples' funding let me know. I am also very busy at this time of the year so if anyone is interested in taking over the coordination of the First Peoples' project I would be happy about that.

Reminder--we need presenters for Gabriola.

Thanks.
Lynne Ladret
